FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Street Photography Goes to College
Las Vegas – On Friday November 13th, 2009, the College of Southern Nevada will host an open reception from 6 to 8 pm to showcase the “street photography” of Las Vegas resident Kenneth Kit Lamug. Capturing “those invisible moments that would otherwise pass us by unnoticed,” Lamug’s work looks unflinchingly at the gritty details of everyday life on the streets of Las Vegas, and in doing so reveals the city’s soul.
Described by some as the art of finding order in chaos, street photography aims at documenting the human condition and drama that plays out in public places, places that everybody visits every day. Here, in the street where you live, the parking lot of your favorite grocery store, the bus stop, the street photographer captures real, candid, unaltered impressions of the truth, beauty, and strangeness of our world that make us see it again fresh and new. The camera acts as an unobtrusive extension of the eye in any given situation, framing and freezing a mood or event that would otherwise go unnoticed, thereby transforming the actions, interactions and humorous juxtapositions of our lives’ fleeting moments into dramatic and intriguing art.
Lamug, a self-taught photographer, shoots with a film camera using a wild angle lens “to bring the audience into the moment and scene.” He works mostly with black & white film to emphasize the content and composition of the image without distraction of color. His technique is perfectly matched with his passion for street photography, as evident in his ability to document human drama and life in motion on the pavement of Las Vegas.
Kenneth Kit Lamug was born in Manila, Philippines. There, as a youth, he immersed himself in the visual arts, concentrating on capturing the vibrant world around him. Upon moving to Las Vegas when he was 17, Lamug began a career in advertising. Not fully satisfied with the creative outlet of his web and print work, Lamug has kept growing as an artist in multiple mediums. He has written several film scripts and co-directed and acted as cinematographer on two independent feature-length films in the Las Vegas area (and is at work on a third). His interest in still photography has rewarded him as a Finalist in the UnScene Photography National Tour in 2008 at the Symbolic Gallery, features in various publications including City Life, and exhibits in such galleries as the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art and the Cinevegas photography showcase. With his street photography, Lamug has once again set out to capture the vibrant world around him.
Lamug’s photography will remain on exhibit from November 6th to December 16th. Also showing are the photographs of Tom Jones IV, a photojournalist for the Las Vegas Review Journal in the 1970s. Mr. Jones will be featuring some of his best work from his years as a journalist as well as contemporary pieces. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday from 8am to 8pm. The gallery is located in the Telecommunication Building of the College of Southern Nevada at 3200 East Cheyenne Ave. in North Las Vegas, NV.
