Street photography is a form of documentary photography that visually captures the life that people live in the public space (usually outdoors, hence the name). The photographer captures the interactions, lost gazes and mundane moments and puts a frame around them using his/her camera.
One of the beautiful elements of SP is that they are spontaneous, unplanned and unpredictable... anything can happen. A photographer must be alert at all times, patient and must always be looking and anticipating for things to happen and for the subjects to fall into the right places for a cohesive and interesting moment to occur.
Street Photography is one of the oldest genres of photography going as far back since the first cameras were invented. In the advent of portable 35mm cameras, many more photographers have been going out into the world discovering moments, and creating pictures that mean something to them.
The simplicity of photography lies in the fact that it is very easy to make a picture. The staggering complexity of it lies in the fact that a thousand other pictures of the same subject would have been equally easy.
Photography is about finding out what can happen in the frame. When you put four edges around some facts, you change those facts.
- Garry Winogrand
Actually, I’m not all that interested in the subject of photography. Once the picture is in the box, I’m not all that interested in what happens next. Hunters, after all, aren’t cooks.
- Henri Cartier-Bresson
You do your work as a photographer and everything becomes past. Words are more like thoughts; the photographer’s picture is always surrounded by a kind of romantic glamor – no matter what you do, and how you twist it.
- Robert Frank
…Photography is a response that has to do with the momentary recognition of things. Suddenly you’re alive. A minute later there was nothing there. I just watched it evaporate. You look one moment and there’s everything, next moment it’s gone. Photography is very philosophical.
- Joel Meyerowitz
If you can smell the street by looking at the photo, it’s a street photograph
- Bruce Gilden
The pictures are there, and you just take them.
- Robert Capa
Microscopic sharpness is of no pictorial value.
