Ken is an award-winning author and illustrator of picture books and graphic novels. He was born in the Philippines and moved to the US with his entire family during his teenage years. He considers himself a professional dabbler and has tried everything from beekeeping, filmmaking, 3d printing, photography, coding, and race car driving.
Ken has presented to an audience as small as 25 to an audience of thousands. Ken aims to entertain, educate and enlighten audiences through engaging and fun talks.

Presentation Types

Ken’s presentations include an author’s journey introduction. He talks about his home country of the Philippines, childhood experiences, when his family moved to the U.S., and fulfilling his dreams of becoming an author and illustrator. Ken believes that his story of perseverance, diversity and struggles of coming to a new country is important for kids to hear just as it is entertaining.

GRAPHIC NOVELS

For Grades 1-8
This is a visual presentation focusing on Ken’s author journey and how it influenced the creation of the middle-grade graphic novel Mischief and Mayhem. Ken will showcase his drawing process through drawing demonstrations and time-lapse videos. After the presentation, Ken will be available for questions and answers.

Presentation can include a combination of the following sections (depending on teacher or audience requests):

PICTURE BOOKS

For Grades Pre-K to 8
This is a presentation for a younger age group. Ken will read one of his Picture Books and talk about how the art for the book came together. The discussions can vary depending on the particular book.

Recommended for elementary age group.

Presentation can include a combination of the following sections (depending on teacher or audience requests):

  • Length: 30-minutes
  • Author journey
  • Picturebook reading
  • How a picture book is created (drawings)
  • Time-lapse drawing demonstrations
  • Q&A

CUSTOMIZED WORKSHOPS

Presentations can be tailored to the specific group with prior notice. Some options for presentations include:

  • On-line presentations
  • Adult focused presentations regarding the industry
  • Writing workshops
  • How books are published
  • The comic creation process
  • Drawing or making comics (interactive, audience participation)
  • Creating memorable characters (interactive, audience participation)
  • Interactive drawing with the kids (Ken will draw with kids prompts)

When audience participation is required, please provide appropriate drawing or writing materials.

(Workshops are limited to 25 students per session)

Requirements

Required Tech (Audio/Visual)

  • Television or projector with HDMI input
  • Microphone & speakers for larger audience
  • Wi-Fi access (if available)

Ken will provide either an iPad or laptop with appropriate software for the presentation. For special situations (half in-person/half virtual please inquire in advance).  Please allow a minimum of 15-30 minutes for setup time.

Materials

Venue / School must provide other materials required for audience participation. For example: pen, paper, color pens for drawing participation.

Honorarium

A school visit includes up to 2 presentations per day. Please note: Ken does not prorate the honorarium if the campus only needs a single presentation, but will work with multiple schools who wish to share the day.

Local Visits – Las Vegas / Henderson, Nevada Area
$1,000 per school visit

Long Distance Visit:
$2,000 per school visit

Venue / Host Responsibilities

There will be time for a Q&A after the presentation. Hosts/Teachers are responsible for deciding the best way for students to ask questions. Examples in the past have included preselected questions students read from note cards, a teacher selecting hand-raisers, and students simply lining up one-by-one. I will do my best to answer every question based on the school’s schedule.

 

  • Photography may be taken during the events. If this is an issue, please notify us in advance.
  • Prizes may be given to the audience during the event. If this is an issue, please notify us in advance.

Ordering Books

I ask that any school having me visit allow students to order my books. Ken works with Las Vegas-based independent bookstore The Writers Block for any book purchases. With enough prior notice, Ken can visit the bookstore and sign the books in advance before they are dropped off or shipped to the school. Please allow up to 30 days for ordering and delivery.
